Hungary is to send 150 soldiers to Iraq as part of international efforts to "eliminate" ISIL, Hungary's foreign and trade minister has said.

Peter Szijjarto, speaking at a conference in Budapest on Thursday marking the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the UN, said: “ISIL is a threat to the whole world."

"We can eliminate this threat only by working together and as a result of effective work by the United Nations," he said.

He said the world was facing many problems which have to be solved by the organization, and ISIL constituted the most important problem.

ISIL control large areas of Iraq and Syria.

The Iraqi central government and Iraqi Kurdish security forces have been fighting ISIL since they took the control of Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city, in mid-June 2014.

The U.S.-led coalition has been staging airstrikes against ISIL objectives in Iraq and Syria since mid-September 2014.
