Iraq closes airspace to Turkey, reports claim

World Bulletin / News Desk

After it was revealed that a deal was signed between Turkey and the autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government of northern Iraq, it was reported that the central Iraqi government in Baghdad closed air space to private Turkish jets in protest of the deal.

Turkey’s Hurriyet newspaper claims that the authorities were ordered to reject any incoming private planes from Turkey in the late hours of Friday. Sources are currently waiting for a reply from the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority for confirmation.

Taner Yildiz, Turkey’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister, plans to go to Erbil, the capital of the Kurdish region on December 2 to attend a conference on oil and natural gas. If the reports are proved true, this will mean that Yildiz will not be able to enter Iraq via plane.
