An Iraqi candidate was gunned down in the northern city of Mosul on Thursday, a security source said.

Watheq al-Ghadanfari was shot dead inside a shopping mall in northern Mosul as he waited for a friend to attend a mourning tent, police officer Ghaleb al-Tae told Anadolu Agency.

Al-Ghadanfari, a TV anchor, was campaigning for a seat in the Iraqi parliament during next month's parliamentary election.

Recent months have seen an uptick in violence across Iraq. Although most attacks go unclaimed, Iraqi authorities usually point the finger at Al-Qaeda-linked rebels.
