Iraqi deputy PM, lawmaker survive assassination attempt

Iraqi Deputy Premier Saleh al-Mutlaq and lawmaker Talal al-Zawbai survived an attempt on their lives in western Baghdad on Friday.

Unidentified rebels opened fire on the convoy of al-Mutlaq and al-Zawbai in Abu Ghraib district, a security source told Anadolu Agency.

Five guards were injured in the attack, the source said.

Friday's attack comes less than three weeks before the country's parliamentary elections, set for April 30.

Recent months have seen an uptick in violence across Iraq.
