Thirty-five fighters from the Qaeda-linked Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) were killed on Wednesday as part of ongoing operations in the western province of Anbar, the Iraqi Defense Ministry said.

In a statement, the ministry said that the fighters were killed by army troops in cooperation with local tribesmen and policemen.

The ministry said that four vehicles laden with machineguns were seized by the army.

No further details were given by the ministry, nor was there any comment from the ISIL.

The clashes came after twenty-eight people were killed and 49 others injured in four bomb blasts in Iraqi capital Baghdad on Wednesday.

Eight people were killed and 21 others injured in the successive explosions of two booby-trapped cars in southern Baghdad, a police source said.

He expected fatalities from the two explosions to rise in the coming hours because some of the victims were injured seriously.

At least 20 people were killed and 28 others injured in two explosions targeting the headquarters of the Foreign Ministry and the neighborhood of Karadat Mariam, a senior security official said.

"The latest Health Ministry report stated that 20 people were killed and 28 injured in two terrorist attacks," Saad Maan, head of the Baghdad Operations Authority, said in a Wednesday statement.

According to Maan, two fighters wearing explosive-laden belts blew themselves up separately in central Iraq – one outside Iraq's Foreign Ministry and the other in the Karadat Mariam district.

Iraqi Parliament Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi said the attacks aim at filling Iraqi citizens with fear and usher in an atmosphere of fear across Iraq.

"There must be ways to stop all these systematic attacks, which make the people pay a heavy price," al-Nujaifi said in a statement, a copy of which was obtained by Anadolu Agency.

The US Embassy in Iraq also condemned the attack on the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, calling on the people to work closely with the government to put an end to these attacks.

Iraq has seen an upscale of violence in recent weeks.
