The Iraqi parliament has discharged Atheel al-Nujaifi, the governor of Ninawah province of his duties Thursday.

“A proposal signed by 50 members of Parliament was submitted last week to discharge the Ninawah governor Atheel al-Nujaifi of his duties,” MP Nahla Hussein Hababi told Anadolu Agency.

“The decision was issued after the proposal was accepted by 170 votes out of 218,” Hababi said.

The proposal was submitted against al-Nujaifi because of “his negative stance during the fall of Mosul,” according to Hababi.

Iraq has been gripped by a security vacuum since June 2014 when ISIL stormed Mosul and declared a self-styled caliphate in parts of Iraq and Syria.
