Army officer Karam al-Naemi said two other people were injured in the attack which occurred in al-Zahraa neighborhood in north-eastern Mosul.
Meanwhile, U.S.-led coalition warplanes struck a ISIL position in central Mosul, police officer Hadi Shukr said.
No reports were yet available about casualties.
Once Iraq’s second largest city in terms of population, Mosul was overrun by ISIL along with large parts of the country’s northern and western regions in mid-2014.
Since last month, the Iraqi army, backed by U.S.-led coalition warplanes and local allies on the ground, has been battling to recapture Mosul from the extremist group.
