The President of the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) in northern Iraq Masoud Barzani met with the Gorran Movement (a centrist, reformist Iraqi Kurdish political party) and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) leaders to form a coalition government in Irbil, on Monday.

After the meeting, Barzani stated that they exchanged opinions about the new cabinet and the PUK had insisted on the position of the Interior Ministry and Peshmerga (Kurdish defence force). Meanwhile, Barzani said that KDP wanted these positions to go to the Gorran Movement.

Barzani noted that the KRG largely agreed with Gorran Movement but the negotiation is still continuing with PUK.

Barzani also said they hope that a new Kurdish cabinet will be formed before the Iraqi local elections, due to take place on April 30. He added that his Kurdistan Democratic Party has been negotiating with other parties to form a cabinet after elections in September 2013.
