Efforts to form a cabinet in the Kurdish Regional Government before Iraq's national elections set for April 30 have reached a deadlock, after the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan insisted on holding an interior ministry post.

Talks on Sunday between Nechirvan Barzani, KRG prime minister and deputy chairman of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, and Deputy Secretary General of the PUK, Barham Salih, failed to resolve the standoff.

At a joint press conference after the meeting, Salih said the PUK inisisted it must have a part in a new coalition government.

"We insist on an interior ministry role and have a firm stance on the issue. The PUK party will reach a final decision on its position after final negotiations, along with other parties, on Monday," he said.

Barzani said: "The PUK must take part in the new cabinet. We have different opinions over the interior ministry and will reach a final conclusion after a reassessment of this issue."

Meanwhile, Barzani agreed with the Gorran Movement, Kurdistan Islamic Group (KIG) and Turkmen List agreed on the formation of an eighth cabinet.
