The New York Times reported on Monday citing sources in Iraq's government, stated that Russian experts went to Iraq to get the Sukhoi jets ready for fight against the militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
“In the coming three or four days the aircraft will be in service to support our forces in the fight [against the ISIL]," Gen. Anwar Hama Ameen, the commander of the Iraqi Air Force, was quoted as saying.
On Saturday night five SU-25 aircraft were delivered to Iraq, two more were expected Sunday.
Member of the Security and Defense Committee of Iraq's parliament Abbas al-Bayati said that 10 Sukhoi jets landed in several military airports around the country and that they were urgently purchased by the Iraqi army.
The paper writes that the purchase of the Russian jets is a rebuke to the United States, which have not yet delivered the promised F-16 jets and military helicopters.Last Mod: 30 Haziran 2014, 12:39
