A Scottish member of the European Parliament Struan Stevenson has accused Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki of attempting to commit genocide against Sunni Muslim governorates in the country.
Claiming that Maliki was responsible for a "violent terrorist campaign", Stevenson criticized Maliki’s crackdown on protests against his administration in the Anbar province cities of Fallujah and Ramadi.
Stevenson said that Maliki’s actions were a last campaign "to eliminate his party’s opposition ahead of the elections on April 30," noting that around 1,400 people had been killed and thousands more injured in the siege.
The uprisings in the Anbar province have been blamed on Al-Qaeda linked group, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), although Sunni Muslim tribal leaders in the region have denied this.
Sunni Muslim Iraqi’s have grown increasing upset with Maliki’s Shiite Muslim-dominated government, claiming that Maliki is attempting to eliminate Sunni Muslim opposition figures.Last Mod: 22 Ocak 2014, 15:25
