Six Iraqi civilians were killed and six others injured on Sunday when the army shelled several districts of Fallujah in the western Anbar province, a health official said.
"The Fallujah General Hospital received six bodies of civilians, including a woman and two children, killed in army shelling of their homes," Wessam al-Essawi, the hospital's spokesman, told Anadolu Agency.
He added that six others were wounded in the shelling that targeted six districts of Fallujah, a key city in the predominantly-Sunni Anbar province.
Iraqi army officials were not immediately available to comment on al-Essawi's account.
The Iraqi army has been battling militants in Anbar since last December.
Hundreds of civilians in Fallujah and Ramadi, the provincial capital, have since been killed and injured, according to government officials.
Fallujah has been largely inaccessible to Iraqi security forces since militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) group – whom the government claims are linked to al-Qaeda – seized control of the city.Last Mod: 01 Haziran 2014, 16:43
