The United Kingdom has announced that it will be sending weapons to the Iraqi government to help them in the fight against rebels from the so-called 'Islamic State' group that has taken over the north of the country.
Heavy machine guns and ammunition, worth worth about £1.6 million, are being donated to both the Iraqi government and the autonomous Kurdish Regional Government, British Defence Secretary Michael Fallon announced.
Saying that the arms are due to arrive in Iraq on Wednesday, Fallon said Britain wanted to promote an inclusive, sovereign and democratic Iraq and restore stability and security across the country.
The announcement comes shortly after the appointment of Iraq's new government, led by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, following the resignation of Nuri al-Maliki who was blamed for increasing sectarian strife in the country between Sunni and Shiite Muslims.Last Mod: 09 Eylül 2014, 16:48
