A Turkish court has sentenced a Twitter user to 15 months in prison for ‘belittling religious values.’

Ertan P., a teacher, was sentenced to prison by a magistrate court in eastern Mus province for using a Twitter account named “Allah CC.”

Allah is the Arabic name for God, commonly used by Muslims, as well as Christian and Jewish Arabs. CC refers to an Arabic honorific.

Launching an probe upon a complaint in 2012, Mus public prosecutor accused Ertan of ‘putting himself in the place of God, His Messenger, and angels,’ and ‘denigrating religious values held dear by a large segment of the Turkish society.’

Ertan admitted to using the account but claimed it was later hacked, refusing responsibility for part of the tweets.

The prosecutor said Ertan failed to report the hacking and did not share any information on the matter with his followers, requesting his punishment.

Ertan will face prison time if the court decision is approved by the Court of Appeals.
