The former Ingushetia commander of the Caucuses Emirate Ali Taziyev, otherwise known as Magas, has been sentenced to life in prison in Russia.

Ali Taziyev led the Caucuses resistance against Russia in Ingushetia in the period between 2001 to 2010, the latter half of which he was the commander of the entire North Caucuses. Born in the Chechen capital of Grozny in 1978, he fought under the command of Shamil Basayev from 1994 to 1996, after which he moved to Ingushetia and worked for the local police until 1999.

He rejoined the resistance during the second Russian-Chechen war, but was captured by the Russian authorities in June 2010, following the assassination of a number of Caucuses commanders.

He was charged with establishing an illegal armed group, armed rebellion, banditry and terrorism, to most of which he pleaded ‘not guilty’.
