International Weight-Lifting Federation (IWF) has freed headscarf in women's tournaments.
Kulsoom Abdullah, a 35-year-old Muslim weightlifter, joined a tournament in Atlanta, the United States, wearing clothing that covered her legs, arms and head.
The U.S. Olympic Committee did not approve Abdullah's headscarf and clothing. Upon growing discussions, the issue was brought up to the IWF.
IWF Executive Board held a meeting on June 26, 2011 in Malaysia, and ruled that athletes could wear a full-body "unitard" under the customary weightlifting uniform.
Accordingly, women athletes can join tournaments with a headscarf.
