The life of the Prophet Muhammad is being told in a new and unique fashion in the United Arab Emirates state of Sharjah. For perhaps the first time, the Prophet's seerah (biography) is being portrayed in operah.
Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi of Sharjah praised the new project in the Emirati newspaper The National on Monday, saying that the operah calls to dialogue.
“Dialogue and understanding of each other is the Islamic approach, and one that was adopted by the Prophet Mohammed, and it represented an important aspect of Islamic civilization,” he said.
The operah, which was written by Saudi poet Dr Abdul Rahman Al Ashmawi, narrates the life of the Prophet Mohammad from his birth till his passing and stars more than 200 actors.
However, in respect to Islamic tradition and other creative attempts to portray the life of the Prophet Muhammad such as the movie The Message, the Prophet's character was not portrayed on stage.
