The boy was reportedly refused boarding on the bus because he failed to produce a bus pass. Having feared that he had lost his boarding card, he started to search for it, saying ‘bismillahirahmanirahim’…a common Arabic prayer said by Muslims meaning ‘in the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.’

According to the report in the New York Post, upon hearing this, the bus driver kicked the boy off the bus. “[The child] said it as he was trying to find his card so he could get” home, said Hyder Naqvi, lawyer for the boy and his family. ‘‘He’s a young boy, but he’s old enough to know what discrimination is,” he added.

Naqvi told the NY Post that when the boy got home “he told his parents what happened, and they were obviously upset by it.”

The family is seeking to prosecute the driver for religious discrimination, civil-rights abuses and unspecified damages.
