Northern Ireland's first minister, Peter Robinson, has defended Belfast-based evangelical Christian pastor James McConnell after he described Islam as "the spawn of the devil".

"Islam is heathen. Islam is satanic. Islam is a doctrine spawned in hell," the pastor told his congregation two weeks ago.

Saying that the pastor had "not an ounce of hatred in his bones," Robinson, who occassionally attends the pastor's church, told Irish News that McConnell was just "someone who preaches the gospel" and that he had no plans to stop attending his service.

Robinson earleri this month was also accused of not doing enough to stop racist attacks by the protestant Ulster Volunteer Force in his East Belfast constituency ahead of the local and European elections.
