Religious Affairs Director General Mehmet Gormez hosted a fast breaking meal for ambassadors of Islamic countries in Ankara on Friday.

Speaking at the dinner, Gormez said that currently more than 40 million people were being faced with hunger in Africa which was one of the poorest regions of the world.

He said that Religious Affairs Directorate had launched a relief campaign to help those people, expressing belief that they should share the food with people in need.

Noting that Turkish people extended great support to the campaign, Gormez said that the amount of aid reached 100 million Turkish lira. (one USD equals 1.787 TL)

Ramadan is the Islamic month of fasting during which Muslims refrain from eating, drinking and other physical needs during the daylight hours.

Believed to be a time to purify the soul, refocus attention on God, and practice self-sacrifice; Ramadan is intended to teach people about patience, spirituality and humility.
