Egyptian Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Monday met with visiting US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns.

A military spokesman said via Facebook that the meeting had tackled the latest developments in Egypt, a number of issues of common interests and ways of boosting cooperation in light of the close ties between the two countries.

There was no official US comment on the meeting, which was attended by several top Egyptian military figures and US Ambassador Anne Patterson.

Burns met earlier today with interim President Adly Mansour to discuss the latest political developments.

The US diplomat, who arrived in Cairo on Sunday on the first visit by a senior US official since Egypt's military ousted elected president Mohammad Morsi on July 3, gave no statements after the meeting.

Burns had also met earlier with Premier-designate Hazem al-Beblawi.

A diplomatic source told Anadolu Agency that during his meeting with al-Beblawi, Burns had stressed Washington's desire to see a civilian government that meets the aspirations of the Egyptian people.

While countries like Turkey and Tunisia have described what happened on July 3 as a military coup, the Obama administration has avoided using the term, since, under US law, that would mean an automatic halt of the $1.3 billion Egypt receives every year in US military aid.

Washington has repeatedly called for the release of Morsi, who has not been seen in public since his ouster. The deposed president's whereabouts, meanwhile, remain unknown.
