Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu on Wednesday called on members of Suriname's cabinet to get more active in OIC.
During official visits in Suriname, Ihsanoglu called on Suriname's government members to "become more active in OIC", noting that Suriname should have closer relations with OIC as a member of the organization, saying, "We support Suriname to benefit from OIC and Islamic Development Bank (IDB)'s potential".
Ihsanoglu left Suriname for another OIC member country Guiana of South America as part of his official visits.
Ihsanoglu's two-day visit to Suriname has crucial importance in OIC history for being the first. Besides, he was the first Turkish citizen in Suriname receiving high level protocol and being considered worthy for highest order of state.
In the Republic of Suriname's cabinet, 20 percent of the parliamentarians are Muslim, including the Interior Minister and seven parliamentarians.
