Chilean and Argentinean authorities have declared a red alert and ordered mass evacuation of settlements in 2,5 km radius of active Copahue volcano.

The volcano located 500 kilometers south of Chilean capital Santiago has been increasing seismic activity in last few weeks.

"Seismic activity doesn't necessarily mean the volcano will erupt. But as National Geological and Mining Service notified that the ongoing seismic process shows the volcano is in eruption phase, we had to declare red alert and order evacuation for safety of our people." stated Chilean interior minister Andres Chadwick.

Copahue volcano which straddles in Chile and Argentine is in 2 thousand and 965 meters height. On the Chilean side of the volcano live 2 thousand and 240 people while 900 live on Argentinean side.
