Venezuela's National Assembly looks set to give President Nicolas Maduro the ability to govern by decree for 12 months to tackle corruption and the economic crisis.

A special commission will revise and debate the bill for a second time, but no major changes are expected to be made, despites critics fearing that he may use the new powers to silence the opposition.

President Nicolas Maduro asked parliament in October to give him the ability to fight corruption and "economic sabotage", which has seen the country face a shortage of food and supplies, power cuts and 54% annual inflation.
