FOCUSED ON PROMOTIONS
The annual meeting of the Supreme Military Council has been overshadowed by arrests warrants under an investigation into an alleged coup plan known publicly as "Balyoz (Sledgehammer)". During the four-day meeting, the new command echelon will be determined. 11 generals who are among suspects of the Ergenekon, Kafes and Balyoz probes, expect promotion from the Supreme Military Council.

FOUR KILLED IN MINE EXPLOSION
Four people were killed when their vehicle hit the land-mine planted by terrorists in the southeastern province of Batman. The dead included the former head of the local bar association in Batman.

DOUBLE VICTORY IN BARCELONA
Turkish national athlete Alemitu Bekele broke championship record, while Elvan Abeylegesse ranked the second in women's 5000m in the 20th European Athletics Championships in Barcelona, Spain. For the first time, two Turkish athletes shared the first two ranks.

CRITICAL YAS MEETING BEGINS, EYES TURNED TO SUSPECTED GENERALS
One of the most critical meetings of Supreme Military Council (YAS) began yesterday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Eyes will be on generals, admirals and military officers --who were asked to be captured within the scope of Ergenekon and Balyoz coup plans-- during the regular meeting of YAS where promotions and retirement of 134 generals will be discussed.

WARNING FROM CANKAYA
President Abdullah Gul objected to promotion of suspects of the investigation into alleged coup plan known publicly as "Balyoz (Sledgehammer)". Gul met with General Staff Chief Gen. Ilker Basbug and told him that it would be wrong to promote the suspects who were about to be arrested. Following Gul's warnings, promotion of the officers was not discussed at the annual meeting of the Supreme Military Council.

TURKEY WINS
Alemitu Bekele of Turkey became the European champion in the women's 5,000 m at the 20th European Championships in Barcelona, Spain. Her Turkish teammate Elvan Abeylegesse won silver medal in the race.

CRISIS OF PROMOTION
The annual meeting of the Supreme Military Council has begun. During the meeting, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan objected to promotion of 11 generals, who are among suspects of the Ergenekon probe. But the military insisted on promotion of the generals. The crisis could not be overcome during the first day debates.

EXPORTS RISE BY 5.9 PERCENT
The recent saving packages in the European-Union states have begun affecting negatively Turkey's exports. Exports rose 5.9 percent to 9.4 billion USD in July over the same month of last year. But exports fell when compared with figures in June 2010. Exports amounted to 9.56 billion USD in June. Meanwhile, exports increased 13.14 percent to 64.23 billion USD in the January-July period of the year.

FOUR VICTIMS
Members of the PKK terrorist organization attacked oil wells of the Turkish Petroleum Company (TPAO) in the southeastern province of Batman. They set on fire containers where the workers were staying. Terrorists planted land-mines while fleeing from the area. Four people who were heading to the oil exploration site to extinguish the fire, were killed when their vehicle hit the land-mine. The dead included Salih Ozdemir, formed local director of the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP), and Sedat Ozevin, former head of the local bar association in Batman.

TWO MORE MEDALS IN EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Alemitu Bekele of Turkey won the women's 5,000 meters while her Turkish teammate Elvan Abeylegesse came on the second place at the European Championships in Barcelona, Spain. Turkey, which won three gold and a silver medal in the Championships ranked fifth behind Russia, France, the United Kingdom and Germany.

BATMAN CRIES FOR DEATH OF FOUR PEOPLE
Four people died when PKK terrorists attacked oil wells in the eastern province of Batman. When they thought there was a bushfire, Batman Human Rights Association (IHD) Chairman Sadi Ozdemir, former executives Salih Ozdemir and Sofi Ozdemir of Peace & Democracy Party (BDP), and Batman Bar's former president Sedat Ozevin went to the scene to extinguish the fire. However, they passed on a land mine planted in the road, and were killed.

DORTYOL INCIDENT WAS INSTIGATED
Interior Minister Besir Atalay claimed that the ethnical tension in Inegol (town of the northwestern province of Bursa) and Dortyol (town of the southern province of Hatay) was related with the referendum. Atalay said, "there are some people who provoke citizens and make them to burn police vehicles. There are some people who instigate the incidents."

NAMES OF FULL GENERALS DETERMINED
During the annual meeting of the Supreme Military Council, two lieutenant generals who will be promoted as full general, were named. Since General Staff Chief Gen. Ilker Basbug will retire as of August 30, Land Forces Commander Gen. Isik Kosaner is expected to be the new chief of the General Staff and First Army Commander Gen. Hasan Igsiz is expected to be appointed as the new commander of the Land Forces.

BIRD DIPLOMACY ON WORLD PRESS
International news agency Associated Press served a news report about Turkish Premier's wife Emine Erdogan's sending bird to Syria. When Syria's first lady Asma Assad said that northern bald ibis was about to extinct in Syria, Emine Erdogan donated two juvenile and four adult northern bald ibis to Syria. According to the news, one of the birds, which was attached a satellite transmitter, migrated and already reached Saudi Arabia.

Turkish athletes wrote history in the final of women's 5000m on the last day of the 20th European Athletics Championships in Spain. Alemitu Bekele broke the championships record and won gold medal. Also, Elvan Abeylegesse --who was the champion of 10,000m-- won silver medal in the same race. Two Turkish athletes' being on the same stage was a first in history.

BASBUG RETIRED, REPLACED BY KOSANER
Four-day Supreme Military Council (YAS) meeting began under the shadow of "Balyoz coup plan" trial. Chief of General Staff Gen. Ilker Basbug --who will retire on August 30-- was replaced by current Land Forces Commander Gen. Isik Kosaner. First Army Commander Gen. Hasan Igsiz will be the new Land Forces Commander. Third Army Commander Gen. Saldiray Berk --who is number one suspect of Ergenekon case-- became the commander of Training & Doctrine Command (EDOK).
