NO PROMOTION TO BALYOZ CULPRITS
11 generals against whom arrest warrants were issued under the Balyoz probe, were not promoted. The name of Gen. Hasan Igsiz was not included in the list that was sent to the President for approval. Gen. Saldiray Berk who was waiting to be appointed as a force commander became Commander of the Land Forces Training and Doctrine Command (EDOK). No military personnel was expelled during the council meeting.

FENERBAHCE BID BITTER FAREWELL TO CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
Fenerbahce lost 1-0 out to Young Boys of Switzerland and bade farewell to the Champions League. Fenerbahce's Stoch was sent off in 53 min. Fenerbahce will now compete in the UEFA Europa League play-off round.

NEW RECIPIENTS OF DRIVER'S LICENSES TO BE CONSIDERED "INTERN DRIVERS" FOR 2 YEARS
A draft law in the Turkish Parliament will make the new recipients of driver's licenses "intern drivers" for a period of two years. If the "intern driver" receives traffic tickets for a total of 100 points, he/she will lose the driver's license.

CHP EXPELS THOSE SAYING "YES" TO REFERENDUM
Turkey's main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) is about to expel two names from the party for announcing that they would vote "yes" in the referendum on September 12. Mayor of Yedisu town of eastern province of Bingol, Mehmet Memioglu, and a CHP deputy from Ankara, Esref Erdem, have been sent to the disciplinary council of CHP and are likely to be expelled.

DON'T DIE WHILE TRYING TO LOSE WEIGHT
Secretary General of the Union of Turkish Pharmacists, Ozgur Ozel, warned consumers about drugs taken to lose weight. Ozel said that any drug taken to lose weight should be done so under the guidance of a medical doctor.

TOUGH PENALTY FOR DRIVING UNDER INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES
A new draft law at the Turkish Parliament brings a two-year prison term for those drivers arrested under the influence of alcoholic beverages. Furthermore, based on the draft law, red traffic light runners may lose their driver's licenses for a period of one year.

TURKISH AIRLINES CHOSEN AS MOST "FINANCIALLY HEALTHY" AIRLINE COMPANY
One of the most important magazines in the aviation industry, Aviation Week, has chosen the Turkish Airlines (THY) as the most "financially healthy" airline company in 2009. The THY received 80 points from Aviation Week and left behind world's top 35 airline companies.

TOYOTA BREAKS SALES RECORD
Toyota sold 5,289 vehicles in July in Turkey. This figure was Toyota's highest in a single month since it entered the Turkish market in 1990. Toyota expects to sell more than 32,000 vehicles in Turkey in 2010.

SUPREME MILITARY COUNCIL CRISIS NOT SOLVED
On the fourth day of the annual meeting of the Supreme Military Council, the government and the military could not agree over appointment of 1st Army Commander Hasan Igsiz as the new land forces commander. The new chief of staff and the new Land Forces commander were not in the appointment list that was sent to the President's approval.
The appointment of the General Staff chief and the Land Forces commander is expected to be made today. According to backstage rumors this process can go on until August 30. If the appointments are not made until this date, Isik Kosaner, who is expected to become the chief of General Staff, Gendarmerie Commander Atilla Isik and 1st Army Commander Hasan Igsiz are expected to get automatically retired.

NUMBER OF POISINOUS PRODUCTS 691, NOT 77
Ankara Chamber of Commerce Chairman, Sinan Aygun said the number of products posing health hazards was not limited to 77, underlining that many unhealthy products ranging from toys to baby bottles, from injectors to plastic plates entered Turkey after January 1, 2006. "It's hard to recall these products from the market, these products should be announced so that citizens shall not buy these."

ERGENEKON PROSECUTOR AFTER BAYKAL
Ergenekon Prosecutor Zekeriya Oz confirmed that he was investigating allegations about Republican People's Party former leader Deniz Baykal. Oz said he was investigating a number of people including Baykal for attempting to "influence the conduct of fair trial."
Oz said, "Baykal is a lawmaker, therefore legal procedures will be examined and the process will continue. However, a report on the issue is not yet made."
Former Justice Minister Seyfi Oktay is investigated under the same allegations.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WITHOUT FENERBAHCE
Fenerbahce lost 1-0 out to Young Boys at their home in the Champions League 3rd qualifying round second leg. With this result, Fenerbahce who drew 2-2 with Young Boys in the first leg match were eliminated. Fenerbahce will compete in the UEFA Europa League play-off rounds.

GARANTI BANKASI POSTS 2 BLN TL PROFIT IN 6 MONTHS
Turkey's Garanti Bankasi posted a net profit of 2.54 billion TL (approx. 1.69 billion USD) in the first six months of 2010. The bank said that it provided loans worth 76.47 billion TL (approx. 50.98 billion USD) in the first half of 2010.

FINNISH PM ASKS SIMSEK ABOUT REFERENDUM IN TURKEY
Finnish Prime Minister Mari Kiviniemi asked the visiting Turkish Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek about the upcoming referendum in Turkey. Simsek's response was that the majority of Turks would vote "yes" to the referendum on September 12. "All public polls indicate that most of the people would vote in favor of the referendum," Simsek said.

MILITARY RESISTS, ERDOGAN CROSSES OUT
Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan did not send the military's proposal to promote Gen. Hasan Igsiz as the Land Forces commander, to the presidential palace. Therefore, the appointment of the new Chief of Staff was also not made.
According to the part of the Supreme Military Council decisions that were announced after President Abdullah Gul signed it: Gen. Necdet Ozel, possible future chief of staff, was appointed as the Gendarmerie Forces Commander. Gen. Erdal Ceylanoglu, who is known as the General that ordered tanks into the streets in the February 28 period, was appointed as the commander of the 1st Army which was vacated by Gen. Hasan Igsiz. The number one suspect in the Ergenekon Probe in Erzurum, Gen. Saldiray Berk was appointed as the Commander of the Land Forces Training and Doctrine Command (EDOK). Chief of Staff Judge Advocate Hifzi Cubuklu was promoted as Major General.

CRISIS SOLVED IN CHP AS TEKIN WINS A SEAT IN CENTRAL EXECUTIVE BOARD
Following intense discussions, Gursel Tekin won 48 out of 76 votes and won a seat in the Central Executive Board of Turkey's main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) in the Assembly meeting.
CHP Leader Kemal Kilicadroglu who spoke to CHP Secretary General, Onder Sav, before the assembly meting, prevented the nomination of a second candidate for the vacant seat.
Tekin is expected to become Deputy Chairman.

DAVUTOGLU REPROACHES CLINTON
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu spoke with the U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on the phone for half an hour the other day. Davutoglu told Clinton that Turkey paid attention to what the United Nations said. "Our expectation (on the May 31 Israeli attack on Gaza-bound aid flotilla) is that the international committee does what justice necessitates," Davutoglu stressed. Davutoglu told Clinton that rules on how the UN committee would work were not announced. Davutoglu reminded Clinton that Israel did not yet announce its candidate who would join the UN flotilla probe.

MINISTER PROMISES AFFORDABLE RED MEAT DURING RAMADAN
Turkish Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Mehmet Mehdi Eker promised the Turkish people that the price of red meat would go down during the holy month of Ramadan. Eker's comments came after the price of red meat increased sharply in Turkey in July. We will take all necessary steps so that our people enjoy affordable red meat during Ramadan, Eker said.
