Turkish dailies on Monday covered the Syrian jet shot down by Turkish forces on Sunday for violating their airspace and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's speech to the crowd during a local election rally organized by the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party in Istanbul on Sunday.
"Turkey shot Syrian plane," says the front page of daily RADIKAL, referring to the two Syrian MIG-23 fighter planes which approached Turkey's airspace along the Turkish-Syrian border around 1pm on Sunday, according to a press release from the office of Turkish Chief of Staff. The daily also said that tension is mounting on the Turkey-Syria border.
Daily VATAN carries the headline "4 warnings, one shot" alongside photographs of the plane on fire, taken by Anadolu Agency.
"Show of force in Istanbul" was Daily MILLIYET's headline on Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's rally in Yenikapi Square in Istanbul, which according to the PM was attended by two million supporters. Erdogan said that he would not reverse his decision to block Twitter even if all the world was against him. Turkey's official telecommunications board TIB blocked access to Twitter on Thursday night, citing a handful of court orders as the basis for blocking its content.
