Monday’s dailies covered Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s remarks on the upcoming general election, the main opposition CHP’s party primaries plus latest developments in Syria and Yemen.

“Turkey’s future lies in presidency,” was STAR’s headline, reporting a speech by Erdogan on Sunday. A new executive presidential system has become a topical issue in Turkey as parliamentary elections on June 7 draw nearer. Erdogan has repeatedly expressed his support for such a change.

Erdogan, speaking in Istanbul, described the existing parliamentary system as being in the “waiting room” after last year's presidential election. He said he was not chasing this structural change for himself but for Turkey’s future.

Turkish dailies also covered primaries held by the Republican People's Party, or CHP. The party's membership voted on their lists of parliamentary candidates.

HURRIYET said Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the chairman of the party, ran in Izmir, a western province of Turkey, and received 85 percent of the vote. The party held primaries at least 41 provinces to determine their nomination list.

“Youth injection,” was CUMHURIYET’s headline. The daily claimed mostly young people and women took front rows during the elections. However, VATAN reported that Deniz Baykal, former party leader, failed take first place at the primary in Antalya, Turkey’s southern province.

In foreign news, “The next target is Hama,” was HURRIYET’s headline to report that the Nusra Front seized control of the city of Idlib in northwestern Syria on Saturday; the group aims to capture the central Syrian province of Hama next.

The Syrian General Revolution said on Saturday that "revolutionaries" have completely seized Idlib. Syrian opposition factions under a single military group named Jeysh al-Fatah began military operations against Syrian regime forces in Idlib city last week.

“Arabs’ NATO,” was VATAN’s title, saying that leaders participating in an Arab League summit in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on Sunday have adopted the formation of a joint military force to safeguard Arab regional security. The daily said at least 40,000 soldiers are to join the military pact.

The summit was organized after Saudi-led strikes against positions of the Houthi rebel group in Yemen, including some in capital Sanaa.

In sports news, Fatih Terim, the coach of Turkey’s national team, has warned players that the country is “on the edge of a cliff,” according to sport daily FOTOMAC.

“But we can change that. If we play well, we can win the remaining five matches and qualify for the finals,” the daily reported Terim as saying. The UEFA Euro 2016 finals are scheduled to take place in France from 10 June to 10 July 2016.

Turkey played against the Netherlands on Saturday and the match ended in the draw. The positions of both teams in group standings did not change after the match. The Netherlands, in third spot, raised their points tally to seven. Turkey follows on five points.
