All dailies in Turkey, without exception, carry the two major stories from yesterday to their pages on October 30, 2013: Republic Day celebrations on the 90th anniversary of the proclamation of republic and the inauguration of Marmaray, a subterranean rail system that crosses the Bosphorus.
“We have crowned our republic” is what SABAH uses as headline to make its readers aware of the two major stories. SABAH also uses a picture on the front page of the conductor’s cabin of the first ever train that travelled through Marmaray’s tunnels and in there, two presidents - Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamod and Turkish President Abdullah Gul - and three prime ministers - PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Romanian and Japanese prime ministers Victor Ponta and Shinzo Abe – together with Parliament Speaker Cemil Cicek and Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications Minister Binali Yildirim. The daily says the project of the century was opened on a very special day.
MILLIYET’s headline to cover Marmaray opening is “The best present” and also shows President Gul conducting the first train travelling beneath the Bosphorus. The daily says the first designs for the tube passing under the Bosphorus came to life in 1860 during Sultan Abdulmecid’s reign and the groundbreaking ceremony was held for this impressive transportation system in August 2004.
HURRIYET says, the VIP team of two presidents and three prime ministers stopped at the deepest point of the tunnel and placed memorial placards on the tunnel’s wall. It also says that Prime Minister Erdogan gave his directions to make the travel free of charge for Istanbul’s commuters, upon President Gul’s request for a present for people.
“Magnificant finale for the dream of the century” is AKSAM’s and “Turkey’s Pride” is HABER TURK’s headline to cover the Marmaray inauguration. Aksam also covers the reflections of the opening on world media and quotes The Independent as saying the world’s first tunnel that combines two continent was opened and Sultan’s dream came true (referring to Sultan Abdulmecid).
HURRIYET, as well as widely covering Marmaray opening, covers in detail the other celebrations on the 90th Republic Day in Turkey. The daily reports that the day was celebrated throughout Turkey and a big fireworks display on one Istanbul bridge marked the anniversary.
