Five people were killed and eight others injured in a car bombing that hit a Shiite area of eastern Baghdad, a police source said Tuesday.

"An explosive-laden car parked in the Sadr City district went off this afternoon, killing five civilians and injuring eight others, according to a preliminary tally," the source, who asked not to be named, told Anadolu Agency.

The blast also damaged six stores and several buildings, the source added.

There was no claim of responsibility for Tuesday's bombing.

Baghdad witnessed a series of suicide bombings last week that targeted areas in which Shiites were known to gather, killing scores.

The Iraqi government usually blames such attacks on the militant Islamic State of Iraq and Levant group, against which the Iraqi army has been fighting in the western Anbar province.

Iraq has been the scene of mounting violence for several months.

While the army battles militants in Iraq's western and northern provinces, other areas of the country have seen unrelenting bombings, assassinations and attacks on both civilians and security personnel.
