Next month’s parliamentary elections in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will feature 76 female candidates, according to the country’s official electoral commission.
The UAE’s parliament, the Federal National Council (FNC), consists of 40 members, half of whom are directly elected via popular vote and half of whom are directly appointed by the country’s rulers.
Women will account for 22 percent of the total number of candidates in the upcoming polls, which are slated for Oct. 3.
With its headquarters in Abu Dhabi, the council has an advisory role over legislation.
Draft laws are submitted to the FNC for review and/or amendment by the UAE’s council of ministers. If approved, proposed legislation is then referred to the Federal Supreme Council for ratification.Last Mod: 01 Eylül 2015, 14:33
