Scores of African immigrants on Monday went on hunger strike to protest their "inhumane and unlimited" detention at Israel's Holot facility, Israeli media has reported.
The immigrants declared their hunger strike after Israeli police forcibly broke up a sit-in they were staging on the Egyptian border, Israel's Arutz Sheva news portal reported.
Israel set up the Holot detention camp in the southern Negev Desert last year as part of a crackdown on illegal immigration into the self-proclaimed Jewish state.
Immigrants say the Hotol facility "shows Israel's failure to process asylum requests," according to Arutz Sheva.
African immigrants want to be recognized as refugees and granted Israeli citizenship.
There are currently 60,000 illegal African immigrants in Israel.
Israeli law calls for prison sentences of up to 18 months for immigrants who enter the country illegally – even if they are seeking asylum.
Nearly 53,000 refugees, mostly Sudanese and Eritrean, are currently in Israel, according to the U.N. refugee Agency (UNHCR).Last Mod: 01 Temmuz 2014, 09:50
