The African Union's peace council has decided unanimously to readmit Egypt into pan-African body.
Representatives of 15 countries members of the African Union (AU)’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) met in Addis Ababa on Tuesday to discuss the lifting of the Egypt’s suspension from membership in the AU, Al Ahram reported.
The meeting came after a report which stressed that the AU’s decision to freeze Egypt’s membership was based on a “misunderstanding and misestimating” the circumstances that led to the July 3 coup was drafted by Alpha Oumar Konare, chief of Africa’s Committee of the Wise
The PSC suspended Egypt’s AU membership on July 5, 2013, only two days after the ouster of elected president Mohamed Morsi. The PSC viewed the ouster as “unconstitutional”, which violated its charter.
Egypt “will definitely take part in the African Summit” scheduled to be held on June 26 and 27 in Guinea, the head of the Arab League’s department on Africa Samir Hosny said.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Badr Abdel Atty was quoted on Monday by the state-run Al Ahram saying that President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi was invited to the AU’s Extraordinary Summit on Employment and Poverty Eradication, scheduled to take place in Burkina Faso on Sept. 6-7.Last Mod: 17 Haziran 2014, 17:39
