Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi and Organization of Islamic Cooperation Secretary General Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu urged all parties in Syria to halt all acts of violence during Eid al-Fitr on August 8-10.
"We urge the warring parties to fully respond to this appeal and cease fire during this religious occasion," they said in a joint statement late Monday.
"Reaching a political settlement for the crisis which meets the aspirations of the Syrian people is a common Arab-Islamic objective," added the statement.
"Responding to this appeal might be a chance to calm the situation and give room for efforts to overcome hurdles to a political settlement, to pave the way to proceed quickly on the road of achieving the aspired-for objective," it hoped.
"This appeal will give humanitarian organizations a chance to deliver urgently needed assistance to ravaged areas."
The statement urged all regional and international parties to support this initiative and urge the Syrian government, being the strongest party, to show wisdom and end acts of killing and destruction so that all issues can be addressed via peaceful means.Last Mod: 30 Temmuz 2013, 11:59
