Army helicopters carried out an airborne operation in the North Sinai city of Sheikh Zuweid early Saturday and arrested a number of people, eyewitnesses told Anadolu Agency.
They said troops were dropped from helicopters by ropes to besiege houses and arrest those inside.
The airborne operation was the first in the area by army troops, according to witnesses.
A security source told AA that the army had started a military operation against those suspected of involvement in recent attacks on security checkpoints.
At least 37 people, both civilians and security personnel, have been killed in a spate of militant attacks in the Sinai region since July 5, two days after the military ousted Mohamed Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected president.Last Mod: 27 Temmuz 2013, 18:03
