Assad like his father, won't give up powers: Lebanese leader

World Bulletin/News Desk

Walid Jumblatt, the current leader of the Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) and the most prominent leader of Lebanon's Druze community, said, "the clash of the US, looking out for the interests of none except for Russia, Iran and Israel, will lead the Syria crisis to drag on."

Evaluating the current developments in Syria to Turkish press, Jumblatt said, "I don't share the opinion that Russia can convince Assad in regards to the 'transition government' made up of members of the current government and the opposition. Adopting autocracy, Assad, just like his father, will not give up his powers."

"Brave Syrian people will have the final say and will not allow the destruction of the country," Jumblatt noted.

"The ethnic cleansing policy initiated by Assad in the Syrian cities of Banias and Tartous had been attempted in the country during the French hegemony in 1920 too. However, this project failed with the efforts of Syrian patriots," Jumblatt said.

Jumblatt also touched on the role of Turkey in the Syria crisis and said, "Turkey plays a significant and positive role in the Arab region. Turkey can prevent Syria from dividing. Turkey can cooperate with Egypt and Saudi Arabia, and avert the division policy set for the Arab world."
