Local sources have accused the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad of violating a temporary truce brokered by the U.S. and Russia in the northern province of Aleppo.

“A regime helicopter dropped four barrel bombs on southwest Aleppo,” the sources told Anadolu Agency on Thursday on condition of anonymity because of safety concerns.

A 48-hour truce came into effect in Aleppo on Thursday after days of intense fighting between regime forces and opposition fighters.

Since April 21, regime forces and Russian warplanes have intensified attacks on opposition-held areas in Aleppo, killings scores of civilians.

Syria has been locked in a vicious civil war since 2011, when the regime cracked down on pro-democracy protests.
