UN and Arab League special envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi has asked for the support of the Iraqi government for political solution to the Syrian crisis within the scope of preparations for Geneva II Confererence expected to gather world leaders next month.
A statement released by the Iraqi Premier Office, said that Brahimi met Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in Baghdad on Monday as part of his efforts to muster support for the Geneva II conference.
It was also stated that while asking for support of al-Maliki for a political solution in Syrian crisis, Brahimi asked Maliki to call for the parties of the Syrian crisis to reach a compromise.
Underlining that al-Maliki welcomed the request of support for "a peaceful and political solution" in Syria, the statement added:
"Syrian people's suffering should be stopped. Millitary intervention option would drift the country to a cul de sac, but a political solution of the crisis would bring about more positive consequences."
Brahimi met Arab League Secretary General Nebil al-Araby and Egyptian Foreign Minister Nebil Fahmy in Egypt beforehand within the scope of preparation for the Geneva II Conference expected to start on November 23.Last Mod: 22 Ekim 2013, 10:26
