Joint UN and Arab League Special Envoy on Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi on Thursday said that the solution of the Syrian crisis at the United Nations (UN) depended on an agreement between the US and Russia.
Speaking to reporters at the headquarters of the Arab League in the Egyptian capital of Cairo on Thursday, Brahimi underlined that a possible agreement between the US and Russia would facilitate an international decision on Syria.
"Such an agreement may be a hope for the solution of the Syrian crisis," Brahimi said.
Praising the President of the Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces Ahmad Moaz al-Khatib for his offer of dialogue with the Syrian regime, Brahimi emphasized that such an offer was "brilliant".
"With his offer of a dialogue, al-Khatib left the Syrian administration in a difficult position," Brahimi stressed.
Al-Khatib's initiative involved not trying Bashar al-Assad in court if he left his position, sitting down at a negotiating table with those Syrian officials who were not involved in bloodshed, the release of 160,000 prisoners in Syria and renewal of the passports of Syrian nationals living overseas.
