The Egyptian Foreign Ministry has decided to close its embassy in Yemeni capital Sanaa, citing the "deteriorating security situation," the state MENA news agency reported Monday.

According to the agency, Egyptian ambassador and the mission's diplomatic staff returned Monday morning to Cairo as the embassy was closed.

Fractious Yemen has remained in the throes of turmoil since the ouster of President Ali Abdullah Saleh in 2012 after 33 years in power.

Yemen's Shiite Houthi group recently took control of Sanaa and has since tried to extend its influence to other parts of the country as well.

This has pitted the group against local Sunni tribes and Al-Qaeda, the latter of which is said to be active in Yemen.
