Egypt on Thursday condemned recent Syrian barrel bomb attacks in the northern city of Aleppo.

"Egypt is following reports of the tragic situation in the city with deep concern," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"This escalation on the part of the Syrian government and pursuing this approach – which is clearly of a savage nature – at this critical juncture does not serve the goal of reaching a political settlement of the Syrian crisis," the ministry added.

In recent days, scores of people have been killed in a string of barrel bomb raids in Aleppo by the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

The Foreign Ministry reiterated its rejection of attacks on civilians, stressing the need to respect international humanitarian law.

Syria has been in the throes of conflict since 2011, when a peaceful uprising against al-Assad escalated into civil war following a violent government crackdown.

According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, more than 136,000 people have been killed since the beginning of the conflict in March 2011.
