An Egyptian court sentenced leader Adel Habara and six others to death over their alleged involvement in the case known as the second Rafah massacre.

Ali Ismael, a lawyer for the defendants, told Anadolu Agency that the decision will be appealed, adding that the court had referred the defendants to the county’s Grand Mufti at the first session without fulfilling the demands of their lawyers.

Egyptian courts refer cases to the country’s Grand Mufti to consider possible death sentences. However, his opinion is non-binding.

Thirty-five people, including Habara, were accused of terrorism-related charges after 25 Egyptian security personnel were killed in Rafah in 2013.
