Egypt's military-backed government on Wednesday dismissed reports that it had hired an Israeli maritime security company to secure the Suez Canal.

Reports recently circulated on local social media claimed that Egypt's Suez Canal Authority (SCA) had hired Israeli company Seagull Maritime Security to secure the vital waterway.

Cyber-activists cited the company's website as saying that Seagull was "capable of embarking/disembarking armed guards at the following locations, all approved of by the local government authorities."

The website included "Suez, Egypt" among those locations.

According to a subsequent SCA statement, the reports "are categorically devoid of truth… and aim to shake security and spread false news."

The SCA went on to assert that the Suez Canal was secured exclusively by Egyptian police and army forces.
