A high school student in the Nile Delta province of Kafr al-Sheikh was remanded in custody on Thursday for possessing a ruler emblazoned with the four-finger "Rabia salute."

The student's lawyer, Ihab Maatal, told Anadolu Agency that his young client, Khaled Bakara, had been jailed for having a ruler bearing the Rabaa symbol.

The bright yellow symbol has come to signify solidarity with the hundreds of supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi who were killed on August 14 when their sit-in in Cairo's Rabia al-Adawiya Square was violently dispersed by security forces.

"His [Bakara's] teacher and the school headmaster called the police when they saw the Rabaa sign on the ruler," the lawyer said.

On Wednesday, an Alexandria court sentenced 14 young female Morsi supporters to 11 years in prison each for "illegal assembly and belonging to a banned group."
