An Egyptian court on Tuesday sentenced 11 men to death for involvement in deadly soccer stadium violence in 2012, a televised court session showed.
One of the 11 men was sentenced in absentia.
The court also slapped 10 defendants with a 15-year jail term each and 15 others with 10 years in prison over the killing of 72 football fans following a game between Cairo’s Al-Ahly club and local team Al-Masry.
The court also jailed 15 people, including Port Said’s former security chief, for five years and acquitted 21 others in the case.
Tuesday’s rulings are still subject to appeal.
In April the judge had referred the sentencing of the 11 to Egypt's Grand Mufti, the country's most senior religious authority, a step towards the death penalty.
