Egyptian university students opposed to the army's ouster of elected president Mohamed Morsi staged on Sunday a fresh round of protests countrywide against former army chief Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi's decision to run for president.

Student protests were staged in Cairo, Al-Azhar, Ain Shams and Hilwan universities in the capital Cairo and the adjacent Giza province.

Security forces fired teargas on Ain Shams protesting students, who hurled stones at the troops, according to eyewitnesses.

Similar university protests took place in Minya in Upper Egypt, Beni Sueif in the center, Zagazig in the Nile Delta and Alexandria in the north.

Al-Sisi, seen as the driving force behind the army's ouster of Morsi last summer, resigned last month as defense minister to contest the presidential elections, slated for May 26-27.

Several Egyptian universities have been rocked by demonstrations against Morsi's overthrow since the beginning of the academic year in September.
