An Egyptian army officer was killed in an attack in the Suez Canal province of Ismailia on Monday, military sources told Anadolu Agency.

According to the sources, a group of unidentified gunmen opened fire at a military checkpoint at the entrance of Ismailia city, seriously wounding a lieutenant colonel.

He later succumbed to his injury at a military hospital.

Egypt has seen a wave of attacks on police and army troops since August's bloody dispersal of sit-ins staged by supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi, which left hundreds of demonstrators dead and injured.

Earlier Monday, Morsi and seven other defendants appeared in court on alleged charges of inciting the murder of demonstrators outside the Ittihadiya presidential palace late last year.

The court has been adjourned until January 8 to give defense lawyers time to examine the case papers.
