Four rebels, including a senior leader of Ansar Beit al-Maqdis group, have been shot dead in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, a security source said.

Shadi al-Manaei and three other rebels were killed when unidentified gunmen opened fire at their vehicle in central Sinai late on Thursday, the source told Anadolu Agency.

The source cited "revenge" for the attack after a tribesman had been killed by rebels.

There was no claim of responsibility for the attack and Egyptian authorities have yet to comment.

On Thursday, the Egyptian army said that four rebels had been killed and 25 others arrested, including two Palestinians, in security swoops in Sinai.

Sinai has recently seen an unprecedented spike in attacks in which dozens of security personnel have been killed.

The Egyptian army is already engaged in a wide-ranging military operation in Sinai, launched last September with the stated aim of flushing out rebel groups.

The security situation in Sinai has deteriorated markedly since last July's ouster of president Mohamed Morsi – Egypt's first freely elected president – by the army.

Egyptian officer killed in Sinai attack

An Egyptian police officer has died of wounds sustained in an attack near Egypt's border with Israel, a security source said.

The officer and two other policemen were injured when unidentified rebels opened fire on their patrol near border with Israel late on Thursday.

Egyptian authorities have yet to comment on the attack, for which no group has yet claimed responsibility.
