Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi is set to make his maiden visit to the United States next month to attend the 69th Session of the U.N. General Assembly, according to a statement by the presidency.

During his stay in New York, al-Sisi will also participate in the 2014 U.N. Climate Summit, due to take place from September 21 to 25, the statement said.

It will be al-Sisi's first visit to the United States since he was declared the winner of a presidential poll conducted in May.

Egypt-U.S. relations soured shortly after the Egyptian military ousted Mohamed Morsi – Egypt's first freely elected president – in July of last year.

As a result, the U.S. partially withheld annual military and financial assistance to Egypt, including the delivery of certain military equipment.

Al-Sisi, a former army chief, is widely seen as the architect of Morsi's ouster last summer and subsequent imprisonment.

In April, Washington lifted a ban on the delivery of ten Apache helicopters to Egypt, saying the move aimed to bolster the Arab country's counter-terrorism efforts in the Sinai Peninsula, which shares borders with both Israel and the blockaded Gaza Strip.
