An explosion hit the railway line between the coastal cities of Alexandria and Marsa Matrouh in northern Egypt on Friday.

Security sources told Anadolu Agency that an explosive device went off, causing disruptions to railway services.

There was no immediate confirmation of the incident by Egyptian authorities as of the filing of this report.

Egypt has been in a state of turmoil since security forces on Wednesday violently dispersed two major protest camps set up by supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi in Cairo's Rabaa al-Adawiya Square and Giza's Nahda Square.

The Health Ministry has said that at least 638 people were killed in nationwide violence since Wednesday, including 288 in Rabaa and 87 in Nahda.

However, the official death toll remains far below that given by the National Alliance for the Defense of Legitimacy, a coalition of pro-Morsi Islamist parties and figures, which has put the number of deaths from the Rabaa sit-in alone at some 2,600.
